We are proud to announce the publication of our recent innovation paper in the European Journal of University Lifelong Learning (Vol. 8, No. 2, 2024), which highlights the essential role of universities in promoting liberal democracy and cultivating a just, accountable society. Through ULLL programmes, HEIs can reinforce democratic values among teaching staff and students, empowering them as responsible citizens.

The paper explores the Democrat project, which focuses on participatory curriculum redesign and innovative teaching methods to embed democratic competencies within school environments. The project exemplifies effective practices for strengthening liberal democracy through ULLL in the EU. By reshaping education for responsible democratic citizenship with participatory curriculum redesign and innovative learning methods, the project serves as a model for integrating democratic and sustainability-oriented teaching practices in HE and ULLL.

The successful integration of the Democrat project’s outcomes into ULLL practices would benefit individual learners and strengthen societal cohesion and democratic resilience. Outcomes can support ULLL practices by providing a structured approach to embedding democratic education within HE.
