University Lifelong Learning has never had a single purpose. It supports people in adapting to changing labour markets, developing new competences and progressing in their careers. But its contribution goes far beyond employability: universities also have a responsibility to support personal development, social inclusion, active citizenship and the wellbeing of individuals and communities.
This is the starting point for the 2026 eucen Autumn Seminar, taking place in Barcelona on 19–20 November, under the theme “The Two Faces of ULLL: Employability and Social Mission.”
The seminar will explore the relationship between these two dimensions of University Lifelong Learning. How can universities respond to the growing demand for upskilling and reskilling while maintaining their wider social mission? How can ULLL contribute simultaneously to economic resilience and more inclusive, cohesive and democratic societies? And how can universities ensure that their lifelong learning provision reflects the needs of both learners and society as a whole?
These questions are particularly relevant at a time when technological, demographic, economic and social transformations are reshaping both work and everyday life. The pressure to equip people with new skills is growing, but so too is the need for learning opportunities that enable people to participate fully in society and navigate change with confidence.
The Autumn Seminar will provide a space for exchange, reflection and dialogue among university lifelong learning professionals, researchers, practitioners and other stakeholders. Through presentations, discussions and opportunities for peer exchange, participants will have the opportunity to share experiences, challenge assumptions and explore how the two faces of ULLL can reinforce rather than compete with each other.
As always, the eucen Autumn Seminar will also be an opportunity to connect with colleagues from across Europe and beyond, discover innovative approaches and strengthen the community working to advance University Lifelong Learning.
