As part of the eucen Conference 2026 in Cagliari, eucen launched the first workshop of its new Learning City Universities initiative, bringing together 18 participants from 12 universities across Europe, alongside colleagues joining online.

The workshop marked the beginning of a collaborative effort to explore and strengthen the role of universities in creating and sustaining Learning Cities. Participants reflected on how their institutions engage with local communities, contribute to city-wide learning ecosystems, and support social, economic, and environmental development through lifelong learning.

Discussions focused on three key questions: How are universities currently involved in their cities? To what extent are Learning City principles already embedded in institutional practices? And how can University Lifelong Learning (ULLL) units play a more visible and strategic role in supporting local development, inclusion, sustainability, and skills agendas?

The exchanges revealed a rich diversity of experiences and approaches across Europe. Despite differing local contexts, participants shared a common belief that lifelong learning is a powerful driver of social cohesion, active citizenship, inclusion, and sustainable development.

The workshop also highlighted the need for stronger recognition of universities as key stakeholders within Learning Cities. Participants expressed interest in building an ongoing Community of Practice that can facilitate peer learning, share good practices, and develop a clearer understanding of the contribution that universities (and particularly ULLL units) can make to local learning ecosystems.

This first meeting represents an important step towards establishing a strong and active Community of Practice of Learning City Universities committed to supporting more inclusive, resilient, and learning-oriented communities across Europe.
