The SMILE Final Symposium in Barcelona on 16 November gathered a large group of passioned individuals on diversity and inclusion. Both the presentations and panels as well as the workshops and world café were hugely attended and very much appreciated.
The day started with a welcome address from Vice-Rector Montse Puig, from the hosting institution (the University of Barcelona). The programme followed with Carme Royo’s (eucen) presentation of the project, its objectives and outputs and a focus-on panel moderated by Prof Emmanuel Acquah (Abo Akademy University, FI), with Cati Jerez (University of Barcelona, ES), Ester Cois (University of Cagliari, IT) and Claudio Romila (University of Iasi, RO). The group was split in 3 parallel sessions where 11 different diversity and inclusion cases were presented. The parallel sessions were followed by the announcement of the winners of the SMILE Diversity Awards 2023 by the external jury, Dr Pat Davies, and a World Cafe moderated by Isabell Grundschober (University for continuing education Krems, AT) gave to the participants the opportunity to discuss the SMILE tools and their use and impact in a dynamic format.
The afternoon opened with Beate Hörr (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, DE) welcome back and a dedicated Dialogue between Researcher and Practitioner, moderated by Kirstin Sonne (University of Edinburg, UK), with Researcher Lilian Nwanze (Maynooth University, IE) and Practitioner Matthew Weait (Oxford University, UK). The floor was opened for discussion and questions with many contributions and interesting discussion.
The event finished with a networking cocktail and the Symposium dinner.
